ep. 48 | Friday Flow: The Menstrual Cycle and Athletic Performance
One of the most exciting and important areas of research in the field of sports science and nutrition is how the menstrual cycle impacts performance in female athletes, and how best to develop training and nutrition protocols to support this population. However, the research is severely lacking currently, and large gaps exist in order to develop truly evidence-informed guidelines and recommendations. A new meta-analysis and systematic review was just published by a team of experts on this topic, looking at over 50 studies and nearly 1200 participants to see what the breadth of data show. So on the pod today I share the findings and takeaways from the paper in a quick, digestible Friday Flow.

ep. 47 | Athlete Nutrition and Mindset Q&A w/ Lizzie Larkins
Following up from my last podcast on reframing our relationship to sport, fellow plant-based mountain athlete, nutrition nerd, and ski coach Lizzie Larkins returns to the show to dive into some listener questions and discuss topics like positive mindsets around Strava, motivation, and racing in the era of COVID-19. We answer questions ranging from balancing school/social/training balance as a young athlete, pre and post workout fuel for athletes, and more. Thanks to everyone who submitted questions, and hope you enjoy the conversation.

ep. 46 | reframe your relationship to sport
It’s a crazy weird time out there for us humans at the moment. Everything seems chaotic, and sometimes just feels too overwhelming. For us athletically inclined humans, we also are in unchartered territory with competition put on hold for the foreseeable future for most of us. With so many discussions of how racing will look, when it will return, how to keep training hard during covid, something I feel is missing from the conversation is using this time to reframe our relationship to our respective sports and really going inward to understand our motivation and meaning as athletes. So in today’s show, I have a conversation about this and speak to some of my own experiences and offer advice on moving skillfully through this period to come out even stronger.
ep. 45 | Friday Flow | how much protein do endurance athletes need?
Welcome to another installment of The Friday Flow, where I take a quick dive into a specific topic to help you in your quest to achieve excellence as an athlete and human. This week in the flow I discuss protein for endurance athletes: why is it important, how much do we need, and where should we get it? A mini What’s the Deal with Protein if you will for the OG TFF crew ;) obviously this is a very complex and nuanced topic when diving in to the research, so I tried to keep things pretty simple. I am planning to do a refresh of What’s the Deal with Protein in the future, so think of this as the appetizer. Listen in for discussions on specific recommendations, how much protein I eat in a day as a vegan endurance athlete, as well as my philosophical thoughts on the redefinition of protein quality.
