ep. 44 | john slater | the jedi path of movement and meditation

Something very positive that has come out of the coronavirus pandemic was the birth of a Zoom based meditation group I dubbed Friendfulness with a couple of my close friends, including today's guest, John Slater. John is a fellow endurance athlete and meditator, and we dive into all things meditation for athletes. I first met John a little over a year ago and we instantly became fast friends. A super strong runner and vegan athlete, doctor of physical therapy, fellow nerd on topics like consciousness and meditation practice, and generally just an incredibly incredibly compassionate and good human. John also completed a 10 day meditation retreat like mine around the same time, so we share a lot of similarities and background as you'll hear in the conversation.

We drop into the flow on how each of us became regular meditators, the parallels of lessons learned from retreat and daily practice with being an athlete, how and why athletes should start meditating more, and beyond. It's a really great conversation covering a topic so near and dear to our hearts, and a really important theme of In The Flow. Follow John on Instagram @john.slater.

there’s no doubt that body mass is an important metric for endurance sports like cycling or running, but there also exists a paradox of which the focus on weight undermines the other arguably more important determinants of success, health, happiness, and performance in athletes. In this short discussion, I share some thoughts and some realism on the topic of weight loss and why I urge athletes take a step back and ask the ever important question: why?

Coffee. The most widely used psychoactive drug (caffeine) and one of the top traded commodities on the planet. Is it something we should avoid? Should we drink it for health or performance? What does the science say? In this short episode, I break down some of the main evidence around coffee and caffeine and whether you should be concerned about your intake or lack of it - and address some of the main questions around it like is coffee dehydrating? Is it bad to be dependent on caffeine?

ep. 40 | The Athlete's Gut — Patrick Wilson, RD, PhD

If you’re an athlete, particularly an endurance athlete, chances are you’ve experienced some kind of gastrointestinal distress or problems, shall we say, in the area of digestion before, during, or after exercise. I have countless stories of cramping, bloating, bonking, and other unpleasant sensations as a result of poor nutritional choices around training and competition. It’s a very complicated topic, as both the causes and solutions are far from clear cut. But this week’s episode I sit down with registered dietitian and PhD researcher Patrick Wilson to hear about his new book, The Athlete’s Gut, and some of the latest research on the topic so that athletes can make better food choices to avoid problems in the gut.

We cover a lot of ground in an hour, everything from the main sources of gut distress in athletes, individualized fueling strategies during exercise and competition, how to “train the gut”, considerations around the double edged sword of fiber, plant-based athletes, and more. It’s an excellent primer for any athlete wanting to optimize nutrition and better digestive health. ep. 39 | Is a Vegan Diet Detrimental to Athletic Performance?

I’m back with another installment of The Research Report, where the focus is looking deeply into a research study or paper relevant to the themes of In The Flow. Analyze the methods, results, and conclusions and how it fits into the bigger picture of lifestyle, nutrition, and athletics.

This time I look at a new study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition titled Is a vegan diet detrimental to endurance and muscle strength? looking at differences in exercise outcomes in young female vegan and omnivorous athletes. In the episode, I go through the study design and results, and then wax philosophical about the bigger picture and how this fits into the current landscape of sports nutrition and exercise science.
